a way of touching the emotions...
David Welling is a graphic designer, illustrator and writer,
with a broad background in both commercial and fine arts.
He has served as a senior designer at American General, designer
and art director for Halliburton, and advertising artist at
the Houston Post. He currently is the senior graphic designer
for CapRock Communications.
Past clients have included Ogilvy & Mather, the Houston
International Festival, KKBQ-93Q Radio, Corestaff, Hintz Advertising,
KLOL-K101 Radio, Taylor Brown Smith & Perrault, Sykes
Communications, KRIV-TV, School of the Woods and Houston Grand
Opera.
in the realm of traditional art, he has worked in most every
medium — oil, acrylic, pencil, pastel, and charcoal
— but has done most of his work using a combination
of gouache and watercolor. In recent years, he has moved from
the brush to the written word as a form of expression.
As a writer, he has contributed to publications such as The
Houston Press and the Houston Post. His book,
Cinema Houston, was published by
the University of Texas Press in 2007. the book is an extension
of his interest in movies and the places that show them, and
is also represented in its companion website, www.cinemahouston.net.
Cinema Houston is the recipient
of the 2008 Julia Ideson Award from the Friends of the Texas
Room, and the Society of Architectural Historians' 2009 Antoinette
Forrester Downing Award.
David has been affilliated with the Art Director's Club of
Houston (ADCH), the Writers’ League of Texas, and the
Houston Society of Illustrators (HSI). He was elected to the
HSI Board of Directors from 1992 through 1995.
A native Texan—he was raised in Alvin—David currently
lives in Houston with his wife, two children, and their dog,
Disney.
